Timpanist Robert Schulz is a first call timpanist for several Boston ensembles, Back Bay Chorale, Cantata Singers, Emmanuel Music, and Odyssey Opera among them. In addition to his period performance work with Boston Baroque, he also joins the Handel & Haydn Society Orchestra and Opera Lafayette (Washington, D.C.) on occasion. For many years he’s been principal percussionist for the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Boston Musica Viva, Boston Landmarks Orchestra, and Dinosaur New Music Ensemble, performing a vast range of classic and contemporary works for both orchestra and chamber ensemble. Other collaborations include NOVUS NY (NYC) and the IRIS Orchestra (Memphis, TN).
As a soloist, Schulz has performed concerti by Tan Dun (Water Concerto), Lukas Foss (Percussion Concerto), Eric Moe (Kick & Ride Concerto for Drum Set and Orchestra), and Philip Glass (Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra). With famed pipa virtuoso Wu Man, he has given recitals in Paris, Beijing, Vancouver and throughout the United States.
