Boston-based violist Lauren Nelson is a versatile orchestral and chamber musician who performs on both modern and historically informed instruments. She appears regularly with period ensembles including Boston Baroque, Handel and Haydn Society, and Grand Harmonie, while also performing with Emmanuel Music, Odyssey Opera, New Bedford Symphony and Unitas Ensemble. She has participated in national and international festivals including Valley of the Moon Music Festival where she recently performed Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night on gut strings with St Lawrence String Quartet member, Owen Dalby. She has also performed at the Berwick Academy, the Tafelmusik Winter Institute, the American Bach Soloists Academy, Lake George Music Festival, the Banff Centre, and the Prague Summer Nights Young Artists Music Festival.
Dedicated to contemporary music, Lauren has worked with today’s leading and emerging composers, including Andy Akiho, Caleb Burhans, Curtis Hughes, Steve Reich, and Steven Snowden. She was recently appointed the violist of the Semiosis Quartet, a string quartet specializing in new music, and performs and records regularly with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project.Lauren holds degrees in music performance from New England Conservatory (GD), the University of Kentucky School of Music (MM) and the Eastman School of Music (BM). Her teachers have included Roger Tapping, Deborah Lander, and John Graham.
