Es ist ein trotzig and verzagt Ding um aller Menschen Herze.

There is a contrary and despairing thing about all people's hearts.

2. Rezitativ A
Ich meine, recht verzagt,
Daß Nikodemus sich bei Tage nicht,
Bei Nacht zu Jesu wagt.
Die Sonne mußte dort bei Josua so lange stille stehn,
So lange bis der Sieg vollkommen war geschehn;
Hier aber wünschet Nikodem: O säh ich sie zu Rüste gehn!

2. Recitative A
I consider, truly downcast,
that Nicodemus not by day,
but at night dared to go to Jesus.
The sun had to stand still for Joshua so long,
enough for the victory to be completed;
yet here Nicodemus wishes: Oh, that I saw it setting!

Dein sonst hell beliebter Schein
Soll vor mich umnebelt sein,
Weil ich nach dem Meister frage,
Denn ich scheue mich bei Tage.
Niemand kann die Wunder tun,
Denn sein Allmacht und sein Wesen,
Scheint, ist göttlich auserlesen,
Gottes Geist muß auf ihm ruhn.

Your otherwise bright and beloved brilliance
should be shrouded in clouds for me;
since I will question the Master,
I am frightened by the daylight.
No human can work miracles,
for his great power and his being
appears to be divinely chosen,
thus God's spirit must rest upon him.

So wundre dich, o Meister, nicht,
Warum ich dich bei Nacht ausfrage!
Ich fürchte, daß bei Tage
Mein Ohnmacht nicht bestehen kann.
Doch tröst ich micht, du nimmst mein Herz und Geist
Zum Leben auf und an,
Weil alle, die nur an dich glauben, nicht verloren werden.

4. Recitative B
Then do not marvel, O Master,
that I question you at night!
I fear that by day
my weakness could not withstand it.
Yet I comfort myself that you will take up and claim
my heart and spirit for life,
since everyone, if only they believe in you, shall not be lost.

5. Arie A
Ermuntert euch, furchtsam und schüchterne Sinne,
Erholet euch, höret, was Jesus verspricht:
Daß ich durch den Glauben den Himmel gewinne.
Wenn die Verheißung erfüllend geschicht,
Werd ich dort oben
Mit Danken und Loben
Vater, Sohn und Heilgen Geist
Preisen, der dreieinig heißt.

Be encouraged, fearful and timid minds,
take hold of yourselves, hear what Jesus promises:
that through faith I shall achieve heaven.
When this promise is fulfilled,
up above
with thanks and praise,
I shall glorify Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
who are Three in One.

Auf daß wir also allzugleich
Zur Himmelspforten dringen
Und dermaleinst in deinem Reich
Ohn alles Ende singen,
