BWV 102 - Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben

Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben! Du schlägest sie, aber sie fühlen's nicht; du plagest sie, aber sie bessern sich nicht. Sie haben ein härter Angesicht denn ein Fels und wollen sich nicht bekehren.
(Jeremiah 5:3)

Lord, your eyes look for faith! You strike them, but they do not feel it; you plague them, but they do not improve. Their countenance is harder than a rock and they will not turn themselves around.

Wo ist das Ebenbild, das Gott uns eingepräget,
Wenn der verkehrte Will sich ihm zuwiderleget?
Wo ist die Kraft von seinem Wort,
Wenn alle Besserung weicht aus dem Herzen fort?
Der Höchste suchet uns durch Sanftmut zwar zu zähmen,
Ob der verirrte Geist sich wollte noch bequemen;
Doch, fährt er fort in dem verstockten Sinn,
So gibt er ihn in's Herzens Dünkel hin.

Where is the reflection that God polished for us,
when the perverted will sets itself against him?
Where is the power of his word,
when all improvement flees out of the heart?
The Highest, indeed, seeks to tame us with tenderness,
if the erring spirit still wishes to obey;
But if it persists in its stubborn will,
then he abandons it to the heart's darkness.

Weh der Seele, die den Schaden
Nicht mehr kennt
  Und, die Straf auf sich zu laden,
  Störrig rennt,
  Ja von ihres Gottes Gnaden

Woe to the soul, which no longer
recognizes guilt
  and, inviting punishment on itself,
  runs obstinately,
  indeed, even from the grace of God
  separating itself.

Verachtest du den Reichtum seiner Gnade, Geduld und Langmütigkeit? Weißest du nicht, daß dich Gottes Güte zur Buße locket? Du aber nach deinem verstockten und unbußfertigen Herzen häufest dir selbst den Zorn auf den Tage des Zorns und der Offenbarung des gerechten Gerichts Gottes.

Do you scorn the riches of his mercy, patience, and forbearance? Do you not know, that God's goodness lures you to repentance? You, however, because of your stubborn and unrepentant hearts, store up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath and the revelation of the righteous judgment of God.

Denk, was dich würdig zähle

Die Gotteslangmut geht auf einem Fuß von Blei,
Damit der Zorn hernach dir desto schwerer sei.

you all-too confident souls!
Think, how high the price will be
for the yoke of sin.
God's forbearance walks with a leaden foot,
so that later his wrath shall be even heavier upon you.

Beim Warten ist Gefahr;
Willst du die Zeit verlieren?
Der Gott, der ehmals gnädig war,
Kann leichtelich dich vor seinen Richtstuhl führen.
Wo bleibt sodann die Buß? Es ist ein Augenblick,
Der Zeit und Ewigkeit, der Leib und Seele scheidet;
Verblendter Sinn, ach kehre doch zurück,
Daß dich dieselbe Stund nicht finde unbereitet!

There is danger in waiting;
do you want to sqander your time?
The God, who once was gracious,
can easily lead you before his judgment seat.
Then where is your repentance? It is an instant,
that separates time and eternity, body and soul;
O blinded mind, turn back,
so that this same hour might not find you unprepared!

7. Choral
Heut lebst du, heut bekehre dich,
Eh morgen kommt, kann's ändern sich;
Wer heut ist frisch, gesund und rot,
Ist morgen krank, ja wohl gar tot.
So du nun stirbest ohne Buß,
Dein Leib und Seel dort brennen muß.

Hilf, o Herr Jesu, hilf du mir,
Daß ich noch heute komm zu dir
Und Buße tu den Augenblick,
Eh mich der schnelle Tod hinrück,
Auf daß ich heut und jederzeit
Zu meiner Heimfahrt sei bereit.
("So wahr ich lebe, spricht der Gott," verses 6 and 7)

Today you live, repent today,
before tomorrow comes everything can change;
Who today is fresh, healthy and rosy
tomorrow is sick, even already dead.
If you die now without remorse,
your body and soul must burn herafter.

Help, O Lord Jesus, help me,
so that I can come to you today
and make repentance this instant
before swift death overtakes me,
so that today and at all times
I am ready for my journey to heaven.
