An elastic singer praised for his “amusing" and "eloquently versatile voice" (Boston Music Intelligencer), baritone David Thomas Mather thrives when performing in a variety of styles, most notably vocal chamber music, Lieder, and art song. An avid early music practitioner and musical theater enthusiast, he experiments with and blends vocal techniques between genres to create compelling performances that connect to audiences of any background.
As a soloist, David has been featured in performances and masterclasses with early music specialists Anne Azéma, Pamela Dellal, and Ryan Turner, as well as Broadway icons Laura Bell Bundy, Alice Ripley, Laura Osnes, and Marla Mindelle. He has been pleased to work collaboratively with prolific opera composers like Christopher Theofanidis, Mark Adamo, and Bright Sheng, as well as premiere pieces by GRAMMY award-winner Jennifer Higdon, Niloufar Nourbakhsh, and Jonathan David. Recent solos in concert performances include Orff’s Carmina Burana, BWV 106, and BWV 140.
David made his debut with The Boston Camerata in 2019 in the touring cast of the Play of Daniel, and has since appeared in productions of Dido and Aeneas. He has had the immense pleasure of performing with groups such as Emmanuel Music, Calliope's Call, Lowell House Opera, the Utah Symphony and Grand Teton Music Festival Choruses. He works regularly as a section leader and cantor in the greater Boston area, and sings as a member of Carduus. David has given concerts for audiences in North America and Europe, performing at venues including the Notre Dame Cathedral, La Madeleine, and Jordan Hall.
He holds a BM in Vocal Performance with a Minor in Theatre from DePauw University, as well as a Master of Music degree in Historical Performance, Voice and a Graduate Diploma in Chamber Music from the Longy School of Music of Bard College.
