Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672)
Schütz' great motet "Ich bin ein rechter Weinstock" is one of the most tender and childlike pieces in the great collection published as Geistliche Chormusik (1648). The delicate vocal lines are like the most fragile young vines in a new growth, which is, of course, the exact meaning of the text. Particularly the return of the opening material with its gentle ornamentation has an exquisite quality only available to Schütz.
