Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672)
The Kleine Geistliche Konzerte are Schütz' most intimate works. Written at the height of the Thirty-Years War, they reflect the decimated musical resources of all of the churches and chapels in southern Germany. "Rorate Coeli," SWV 322, for two sopranos, baritone and continuo is based upon a reading from Isaiah associated with Advent. It is unmatched in its purity and sweetness suiting both the text and the vocal combination.
