Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643)
The setting of Psalm 113 is from Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610. Although this work is often done as one large work, the Vespers is actually a collection of Psalm and other liturgical settings. The Laudate Pueri is for 8 voice choir with three duet segments for pairs of soprani, tenors and basses. The piece has Monteverdi's characteristic color and brilliant imagination. The duet segments, usually over a psalm intonation of another voice, are in Moteverdi's most brilliant madrigal style.
