Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643)

The third setting of the Psalm 111 "Confitebor tibi" by Monteverdi is an interesting amalgam of styles. While the very specific and profiled text painting is madrigal-like, the work has certain characteristics that identify it with Monteverdi' s sacred music, particularly the elaborate and very formal doxology that ends the work. While this work is very little-known, it is a particularly wonderful of Monteverdi' s exuberant and dazzling vocal style.
