Orlando di Lassus (1530-1594)
In the 16th century Franco-Flemish composer Orlando di Lassus wrote a series of duets intended to teach the essential skills of singing polyphony, called bicinia. Today’s motet, "Qui vult venire post me" is a very special bicinium, notable for its economic, yet rich harmony and melody in a very short space. It is especially striking how the forward motion and surprising modulations befit the text.
