Heinrich Isaac (c. 1450-1517)
Heinrich Isaac (c. 1450-1517) is regarded as one of the most significant contemporaries of Josquin Desprez as a leading composer of the Flemish school and had an especially large influence on the subsequent development of music in Germany. Laetatus sum comes to us from Isaac’s monumental Choralis Constantinus, a collection of over 375 Gregorian chant-based polyphonic motets that was commissioned for the cathedral of Constance in 1508, and published posthumously in three books 1550-1555. Isaac treats the cantus firmus (fixed melody) resourcefully, sharing the chant among two parts, either in long notes or embroidered with shorter notes.
