Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612)
Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) was the first great German composer to study in Italy. A student of Andrea Gabrieli, his compositions show the influence of the Venetian polychoral style. Hassler’s style is simple, direct and clear, characterized by antiphonal writing between pairs of voices and short motivic imitation. The text of "Quia vidisti me" is taken from the Gospel for today, the “doubting Thomas” passage from John 20 and comes from a set of 31 motets for four to twelve voices titled Cantiones Sacrae.
